Developmental Progressions

Alot of Coaches ask the question "How to keep my players interested in the training but yet improve". Here is a guide of simple progressions in training. Please keep in mind that all sessions should key in on development in a low-stress, fun-filled environment. You should be able to create your own sessions once you understand hat is essential for maximum development.

Each session should include 4 main areas of training:

1. Warm-up: Prepare the player physically and mentally. General motor ability (i.e., balance, coordination and flexibility) should be enhanced. Young players do not need stretching but is a good habit.

2. Individual Activities: Should cover fun-filled methods that can improve players techniques in playing. Non-Drill manner! (Player and a ball)

3. Small Group Activities: Games that challenge the player (without the pressure of high numbers) to improve a variety of skills needed.  Also allwos the player to touch the ball more. (3v2, 4v3)

4. Large Group Activities: Used to understand the different aspects of playing in a match situation as well as continued growth of developing skills under live pressure. (6v6, 7v7)

All coaches need to have the ability to imagine the activity through the players eyes. This is a sign of a good coach. Players should want to return excited to play when in the correct environment.
