Here’s how a Recreational season works, from registration to the first game.

  1. 1

    Find your child’s age group

Enter your child’s birthday in the age group finder. Teams are grouped by birth date, not by school grade.

  2. 2

    Register online by February 28

Registration is on BYGA, our sign-up website. Enter your zip code, your child’s date of birth, and your contact information carefully. That’s how we place your child on a team, and how the league and your coach will communicate with you.

    Register for Spring 2027 →
  3. 3

    Your coach contacts you

A few weeks before the season, your volunteer coach emails you the team’s practice day, time, and park. Practices start in early April.

  4. 4

    Play 7 Saturday games

Games run April 17 – June 5, mostly on Saturdays. Bring cleats, shin guards, and water. Your coach will pick up the team’s uniforms and hand them out before the season starts.

Recreational or Select: which one is right for us?

GBYSL runs two different leagues. If your child is new to soccer, Recreational is the right place to start.

“U8” means “under 8.” Age groups are set by birth date using the US Soccer school-year cutoff (August 1 – July 31) for the 2026/27 soccer year.

U4–U7 teams are co-ed; U8 and up are boys or girls teams. Players may play one age group older; playing down an age group isn’t allowed. Players born before August 1, 2014 are too old for Recreational soccer. Those players are encouraged to join one of our member clubs or an independent competitive team, so they can continue in the GBYSL Select league. For Parents

What to Expect

Seasons, team placement, game day, and how we ask families to behave on the sideline.

Seasons & What Your Fee Covers

Recreational runs two seasons a year: Spring (April–June) and Fall (August–October). The fee covers field rentals (paid to Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County), player registration with US Club Soccer, a uniform, a team photo, and a medal.

Team Placement

  • Teams are formed by the zip code you enter at registration. If there’s no team in your zip code, your child is placed in the closest one.
  • You may request a specific team or coach. We’ll try to honor it if there’s room on the roster, but can’t guarantee it.
  • Players may play one age group older without league approval. Playing down an age group isn’t allowed.

Practices & Games

Your coach picks the practice day and park, usually once or twice a week, starting at 5pm or later. The league schedules games, mostly on Saturdays, with some weeknight games for certain age groups and make-up games.

What to Bring

  • Soccer cleats (not baseball cleats) or running shoes.
  • Shin guards, worn under the socks, at every practice and game.
  • A water bottle. No jewelry of any kind, even taped over.
  • Families buy cleats and shin guards. Your coach will pick up the team’s uniforms and hand them out before the season starts.

Parent Code of Conduct

  1. Be positive and supportive. Keep negative comments to yourself, especially about another parent’s child.
  2. Let the coaches coach. Sideline instructions often contradict the coach and confuse players.
  3. Never address players on the other team, except to encourage them.
  4. Treat officials with respect. They’re human, and they’re volunteers too.
  5. No game-related arguments with opposing-team parents. We want to be known as a league with class, win or lose.
  6. Leave the game on the field once it’s over.
  7. Keep it fun. Kids play because they love the game, so let that stay the point.

GBYSL has zero tolerance for verbal abuse of referees or players, by coaches or parents.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to what new and returning families ask most.

My child has never played. Is that OK?

Yes. Recreational is built for first-time players. There are no tryouts, and every registered player is placed on a team.

What’s the difference between Recreational and Select?

Recreational is GBYSL’s community program: register your child directly, volunteer parent coaches, local games. Select is a competitive league for club teams. See the side-by-side comparison.

How much does it cost, and what’s included?

$175 covers about 8–10 weeks of practice, 7 games, a uniform, a medal, and a team/individual photo. Late registrations are $225. Financial help is available.

What are BYGA and GotSport?

They’re the two websites GBYSL uses, and each does a different job.

BYGA is for registration. It’s where you create a family account, register your child, pay the fee, add registration insurance, and sign up to volunteer as a coach. GBYSL uses it because it’s built for families: it handles payments and collects what we need to place your child on a team, like your zip code. Register on BYGA ↗

GotSport is for games. Game schedules, field assignments, and results are posted there, and you can view them without an account. GBYSL uses it because it’s the official system of US Club Soccer, our governing body: coaches and referees register in GotSport to complete their safety requirements, and referees are assigned to games through it. See the schedule on GotSport ↗

For most parents: register on BYGA, then check GotSport for your game times.

How are teams formed? Can I request a team?

By the zip code you enter at registration. You can request a specific team or coach, and we’ll honor it when there’s room on the roster.

When will I hear from my coach?

Coaches reach out once they’ve been assigned a practice field and time, usually a few weeks before the season. If games are less than two weeks away and you haven’t heard anything, contact the GBYSL office.

What if my team doesn’t have a coach yet?

We recruit a parent volunteer for every team. If we can’t find one, we may bring in a coach from an affiliated club, move your child to a nearby team, or offer a refund. This is rare. Want to coach?

What’s the refund policy?

Recreational fees are refundable only if you bought registration insurance at signup and have a qualifying reason. See Refunds & Cancellation.

How do I reach the GBYSL office?

Call or text 775-825-4900 (office hours Monday–Thursday, 5–7pm in fall and spring; by appointment in winter and summer), or use the contact form. The office is at 5301 Longley Lane, Building A, Suite 5. Look for the GBYSL sign on our door.

Game Day

Game Rules

Recreational games use simplified rules for younger players. Team size and game length by age are in the age group table.

Rules for Every Age Group

  • No jewelry or metal pins of any kind, including taped-over jewelry (FIFA Law 4, no exceptions).
  • Soccer cleats (not baseball cleats) or running shoes, plus shin guards worn under the sock.
  • Parents sit on the sideline opposite their team.
  • No dogs on the fields (City of Reno rule). Please use the trash cans around the fields.

How Rules Change by Age

  • U4–U8: no goalkeepers, kick-ins instead of throw-ins, and players may score directly off a kickoff. No heading.
  • U9–U10: goalkeepers, throw-ins, penalty kicks, and offside are added, plus the build-out line (below). Slide tackles are allowed from U10. No heading.
  • U11–U12: 9v9 with full rules. Heading is allowed at U12 only.

See the full Recreational Standards Chart → Field and goal sizes, roster sizes, referees, and game locations for every age.

Build-Out Line (U9 & U10)

  • Encourages U9/U10 teams to pass out of the back instead of kicking long.
  • When the goalkeeper has the ball, the other team must retreat behind the build-out line until the ball is released and crosses the penalty area.
  • The keeper may pass, throw, or roll the ball. Punts and drop kicks are not allowed.
  • On goal kicks, the ball must cross the penalty area before the other team can cross the build-out line.
  • Offside: the build-out line, not the halfway line, is used to judge offside.

AirPitches (U7 & Under)

Our youngest players play inside AirPitch inflatable boundaries, the same small-sided system used by clubs like Manchester City and Arsenal. The walls keep the ball in play almost the entire game, so every child gets far more touches.

  • 83% ball-rolling time per game
  • 102 touches per player, per game
  • 2,300 steps per game

Referee Abuse Policy

GBYSL follows U.S. Soccer Policy 531-9, Misconduct Toward Game Officials. Referees are protected from the moment they arrive at the field, parking lot included, until they leave.

Assault

Any deliberate physical action against a referee, such as hitting, pushing, kicking, or spitting.

Abuse

Extreme, deliberate behavior without contact that causes serious harm, such as severe threats or cyberbullying.

Gross mistreatment

Harassment, verbal attacks, taunting, or questioning a referee's integrity.

Minimum penalties

  • Suspensions start at 2 games for insulting or taunting a referee and go up to a lifetime ban for physical assault.
  • Penalties triple when the referee is a minor.
  • A second offense doubles the penalty. A third offense is a lifetime ban.
  • A verified assault or abuse report means an automatic suspension until a hearing is held.

Heat & Air Quality

How GBYSL handles smoke and hot weather at games and practices.

Air quality (smoke)

  • GBYSL checks air quality on PurpleAir, using the sensor closest to each field.
  • At an AQI of 125 or higher, all league games and practices are cancelled.
  • We email families and post the cancellation here, aiming for at least an hour before game time.
  • Below 125, cancelling practice is the coach’s call. Whenever the air is less than “good,” decide what’s right for your own child.
Check current PurpleAir readings ↗

Heat & hydration

  • GBYSL follows U.S. Soccer’s youth heat guidelines.
  • Players should arrive well hydrated and drink on a schedule, before they feel thirsty: before, during, and after play.
  • Skip soda, energy drinks, and caffeine during games and practices.
  • If a player is unusually tired, dizzy, nauseous, or has a headache in the heat, have them stop, rest, and drink.

Recreational Coaches

Coach Information

Every Recreational team is coached by a volunteer. Here’s how to get registered, certified, and ready for the season.

Coaches: complete your US Club requirements

Every Recreational coach registers in GotSport to complete SafeSport training, a background check and annual certification before the season.

Register as a Coach in GotSport ↗

Getting Registered

  • Parent-coaches: select “Head Coach” in the volunteer options during player registration in BYGA.
  • Non-parent coaches: send us a message and GBYSL staff will create a GotSport coach profile for you.
  • Register in GotSport and complete SafeSport Training (free), a Background Check (fee required), and Annual Certification.
  • SafeSport must be renewed every year. Refresher courses after year one are shorter.

Scheduling & Logistics

Practice fields open two to three weeks before the first game (weather and city/county permitting). To change a practice schedule, send us a practice request.

Need to reschedule a game? Coordinate with the opposing coach first, then send a reschedule request so we can arrange a new field and referees.

Uniforms, photos, and medals are released to a team representative only. Watch for an email when they’re ready for pickup.

Game rules, including the U9/U10 build-out line, are in Game Rules. Field, goal, and roster sizes for every age are in the Recreational Standards Chart.

Recreational Referees

The Build-Out Line (U9 and U10)

The build-out line teaches younger teams to play the ball forward out of the back instead of punting it over midfield.

  • When the goalkeeper has the ball in their hands, the opposing team must move behind the build-out line until the ball is released and crosses the penalty area.
  • Once opponents are behind the line, the keeper may pass (not dribble), throw or roll the ball to a teammate on either side of the build-out line. The keeper may also roll the ball (not bounce it) and then pass it.
  • Punts and drop kicks are not allowed from the keeper.
  • After the ball is released, opponents may cross the line and play continues as normal. The keeper or goal kick taker doesn’t have to wait for opponents to retreat, and may play the ball to a teammate beyond the line.
  • Goal kicks: the ball must be kicked and cross the penalty area before opponents can cross the build-out line.

Offside

  • The build-out line is the line for offside. Players can’t be penalized for offside between the halfway line and the build-out line, but can be between the build-out line and the goal line.
  • Assistant referees line up with the build-out line, the second-to-last defender, or the ball, whichever is closest to goal.

Guidance for referees

  • Encourage opponents to retreat quickly. Don’t start the 6-second count until all opponents are behind the build-out line.
  • Stand on or very close to the build-out line and ask players to stay behind it until the ball is released.
  • If a player keeps crossing the line after being told not to, award an indirect free kick to the goalkeeper’s team, on the build-out line closest to where the player crossed.

Spring 2027 registration is open.
