GBYSL Select provides a competitive soccer league for the Reno / Tahoe region. Our member clubs and teams play against each other, providing competition without the cost and burden of long-distance travel. GBYSL is a US Club sanctioned league, and US Club player and coach cards are required. Local teams must be affiliated with a member club or register as a GBYSL independent team.

League Format

How the Select League works

GBYSL Select is team-based. Clubs and independent teams register teams, not individual players, and everything runs through GotSport under US Club Soccer.

The Select year

A season, step by step

  1. Mid-May to JuneTryout window

    Players can try out with any club or team without needing permission from their current club.

  2. Before the seasonTeam registration

    Clubs and independent teams register each team for the season.

  3. Before the seasonRosters in GotSport

    Each team builds and submits its roster in GotSport. Every player and coach needs a current US Club Soccer pass.

  4. Before schedulingBlock out dates

    Teams block out the dates they can’t play, such as tournaments, before the schedule is built.

  5. Before the seasonSchedule released

    The full schedule, with fields and times, is posted on GotSport before the season starts.

  6. End of seasonMedals

    The winning team in each division receives medals at the end of the season.

Rules every team should know

US Club Soccer

GBYSL Select is a US Club Soccer sanctioned league. Players and coaches register through US Club Soccer in GotSport and must have a current pass before their first game.

Reschedules need 2 weeks’ notice

Both teams must agree to a new date, and the request must come at least two weeks before the scheduled match. Late requests can result in a forfeit.

Teams handle match cards

Each team brings its match card and US Club passes to every game. After the match, both teams and the referee sign the card, and each team keeps a photo of it.

Two seasons a year

One season in the fall and one in the spring. Teams register for each season.

Local competition

Games are played across the Reno / Tahoe region, including Reno, Sparks, Carson City, the Carson Valley and Truckee. No overnight travel.

Independent teams

Teams not affiliated with a member club can register directly with GBYSL as an independent team. See what it takes →

Select Cancellation & Refunds

This policy applies to competitive team registration fees, not individual Recreational player registrations.

Team Registration Policy

Select registration fees are nonrefundable unless GBYSL Select cannot provide an age group or division of play, including a combined or blended age group.

Select League

Referee Abuse Policy

GBYSL follows U.S. Soccer Policy 531-9, Misconduct Toward Game Officials. Referees are protected from the moment they arrive at the field, parking lot included, until they leave.

Assault

Any deliberate physical action against a referee, such as hitting, pushing, kicking, or spitting.

Abuse

Extreme, deliberate behavior without contact that causes serious harm, such as severe threats or cyberbullying.

Gross mistreatment

Harassment, verbal attacks, taunting, or questioning a referee's integrity.

Minimum penalties

  • Suspensions start at 2 games for insulting or taunting a referee and go up to a lifetime ban for physical assault.
  • Penalties triple when the referee is a minor.
  • A second offense doubles the penalty. A third offense is a lifetime ban.
  • A verified assault or abuse report means an automatic suspension until a hearing is held.

Select League

Heat & Air Quality

How GBYSL handles smoke and hot weather at games and practices.

Air quality (smoke)

  • GBYSL checks air quality on PurpleAir, using the sensor closest to each field.
  • At an AQI of 125 or higher, all league games and practices are cancelled.
  • We email families and post the cancellation here, aiming for at least an hour before game time.
  • Below 125, cancelling practice is the coach’s call. Whenever the air is less than “good,” decide what’s right for your own child.

Heat & hydration

  • GBYSL follows U.S. Soccer’s youth heat guidelines.
  • Players should arrive well hydrated and drink on a schedule, before they feel thirsty: before, during, and after play.
  • Skip soda, energy drinks, and caffeine during games and practices.
  • If a player is unusually tired, dizzy, nauseous, or has a headache in the heat, have them stop, rest, and drink.
